Form or Function

To the consumer, function tends to be of more value that the aesthetic it presents. It is important that the product is functional rather than looking complex and pleasing to the eye. It makes sense that a consumer would want to be able to use something over having it look nice. For example, if you have a website it is better to have it simplistic and easy to navigate that visually appealing. If the user can’t navigate through your site, how could they possibly use what is on it. Form would mean nothing and is not possible without function. The visitors to your site would likely leave it, because people find clear and simplistic things likeable and to make better use of their time.

Personally, I believe that it is important to value form, because you need to catch the consumers attention and be different from your competitors. If your product lacks form, it will not be very memorable. It will also lack the “wow factor” that shows the consumer why it is different from anything else on the market.

Of course, a company must balance form and function to create the optimal experience for the consumer. However, having a functional product is more important. At the end of the day, they are two concepts that you must carry out together in an effective manner.
